Aero TMF's Non-Destructive Testing Services

Aero TMF maintains an excellent reputation for precision quality, reliability, and rapid turnaround times regarding our precision metal surface treatments.

But did you know our team also offers non-destructive testing services for your parts? We’re continuing to expand this offering to further enhance our capabilities and secure our position as a one-stop shop for customers.

Let’s explore the type of non-destructive testing (NDT) we perform and the benefits of adding this service to your metal finishing order.

About Our Non-Destructive Testing Services

Before applying a surface treatment to your parts, we have the ability to conduct a liquid penetrant inspection (LPI). We use this type of NDT to identify defects, such as cracks that are too small to be seen with the naked eye.

Here’s how our LPI process works:

  1. Surface preparation: Our team thoroughly cleans the part to remove contaminants.

  2. Penetrant application: We apply a penetrant liquid on the part’s surface. We use techniques like dipping, spraying, and brushing to apply the liquid.

  3. Penetration removal: After the penetrant settles, we remove the excess liquid with solvent or water.

  4. Developer application: We apply a developer to the surface to draw out the penetrant and reveal any cracks in the material.

  5. Inspection: Using a blacklight, we inspect the part for imperfections.

  6. Evaluation: We evaluate any cracks and accept or reject the part accordingly.

There are three NDT inspection levels, with Level 3 being the most sensitive. We choose the inspection level based on the customer’s requirements. Compliance with customer requirements is our top priority. For example, if we know that a material specification allows for a crack measuring a certain dimension, but the customer has specified no cracks, we default to the customer’s requirement. We also conduct LPI on the number of parts the customer requires, whether it’s every part or a random sampling.

Expertise, Compliance, and Communication

Aero TMF observes strict quality control measures to ensure we reliably carry out our NDT services. For Level 3 inspections, we work with a third-party consultant. For Level 2 inspections, we have a part-time in-house expert who conducts LPIs himself.

Our team follows acceptance and rejection criteria during NDT inspections. We send customers detailed reports with inspection outcomes and recommendations, if necessary. For example, if our inspector accepts the part, we’ll continue with the metal finishing service. If our inspector rejects the part, we’ll review the results with the customer to determine the next steps together.

Why Choose Aero TMF for Non-Destructive Testing Services

Aero TMF offers NDT inspections and metal treatments to provide a one-stop shop experience for aerospace, defense, commercial, medical, and other customers.

We often perform NDT in conjunction with surface treatments such as passivation services. Bundling these services saves customers the trouble of outsourcing inspections before bringing parts to our shop. Instead, we can test and finish your parts under one roof!

We intend to grow our NDT services by hiring a full-time inspector and potentially offering additional NDT methods. Request a quote for our NDT and metal finishing services today.
