Why Precision Metal Finishing Customers Love Our Sandblasting Services

Sandblasting often flies under the radar at metal finishing shops because it’s part of the preparation process for the end process. But at Aero TMF, our sandblasting capabilities are integral to achieving the flawless finishes you see on your final parts.

We want customers to stay informed about every process their parts undergo—even intermediary steps like sandblasting.

All About Sandblasting for Precision Metal Finishing

Sandblasting is the process of smoothing and cleaning a part’s surface by forcing abrasive particles across the material at high speeds using compressed air.

At Aero TMF, we typically use this capability to prepare surfaces for dry lubrication—in fact, most dry lube specifications require sandblasting because this process enhances dry lube adhesion.

However, this method is also great for removing existing paint from parts. Sandblasting creates a clean surface for our painters to work from, resulting in a smooth new finish.

The sandblasting process

We perform sandblasting with specialized equipment at 180 to 220 grit, suitable for both paint removal and surface preparation.

A typical sandblasting process has three steps from start to finish:

  1. Sandblasting to clean and prep the surface.

  2. Passivating the part to prevent oxidation.

  3. Applying dry lubrication to protect against corrosion.

Important considerations for sandblasting services

Here are a few factors shops and customers must consider regarding sandblasting services:

  1. Tolerances. The forceful nature of sandblasting can unintentionally remove material from parts and, in extreme scenarios, cause parts to become out of tolerance. At Aero TMF, we closely monitor our sandblasting process to minimize this risk.

  2. Size. The maximum part size we can sandblast is approximately 24” by 10”.

  3. Masking. Some parts have features like threads that can’t be sandblasted because the wear will affect the function of the part. Masking these features prior to sandblasting is critical. Aero TMF specializes in complex masking to ensure that we meet all specifications.

Alternatives to sandblasting services

If parts have extremely tight tolerances or customers prefer a more controlled method of preparation, there are alternatives to sandblasting. Aero TMF offers these two options:

  1. Chemical stripping, where we use a chemical bath to remove excess paint. This method involves harsh chemicals and carries a risk of damaging parts.

  2. Manual sanding, where we sand parts by hand. This method offers more control over material removal but is labor-intensive, which can increase costs.

Our experienced team will work with you to ensure we select the best option for your part.
